Historical Landmark

Description:
Located in the Sierra Nevada, outside the city of South Lake Tahoe, this was the training site for American track and field athletes preparing to go to the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. A temporary racetrack and training facility was erected at the site, which was located at altitudes equivalent to those the athletes would encounter in Mexico. Media attention was drawn to the site due to both the Olympics and the politics of the era. Echo Summit is significant for its association with sports history and civil rights history, having a profound influence on the history of California.
