What is the Built Environment Resources Directory?
The Built Environment Resources Directory (BERD) files provide information, organized by county, regarding non-archaeological resources in the Office of Historic Preservation’s (OHP) inventory. Listings of resources by county are posted below.
The OHP inventory contains information only for cultural resources that have been processed through the office. This includes resources reviewed for eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places and the California Historical Landmarks programs through federal and state environmental compliance laws, and resources nominated under federal and state registration programs.
How do I access the BERD?
The files are in Comma Separated Value (CSV) format. Click on the desired county file to download a searchable spreadsheet of all information for that county.
Why does the BERD list "Evaluation Info" and what does that mean?
The OHP uses status codes to indicate whether resources have been evaluated as eligible under certain criteria or not. For an explanation of status codes, see the California Historical Resource Status Code listing.
What does it mean if a resource does not appear in the BERD?
If a resource does not appear on the BERD, it does not mean the resource is not historically significant. Rather, it merely means the resource has not, to date, been processed through the OHP or that the resource is archaeological in nature and is subject to confidentiality requirements. Recorded resources not processed by the OHP may be on file at the appropriate CHRIS Information Center (IC) and available through the IC records search process.
Note: Lead agencies for purposes of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) may determine a resource eligible for the California Register of Historical Resources without consulting with nor notifying the OHP. Therefore, OHP records are not comprehensive for the state in relation to CEQA reviews, and researchers are encouraged to contact the local government with jurisdiction over a potential resource to inquire about information they may have in their possession.
How do I access information about archaeological resources?
For a listing of archaeological resources that have been processed through the office, and may have evaluation status information, please contact the appropriate IC.
How do I access information about tribal cultural resources?
The OHP does not maintain an inventory of tribal cultural resources because it has no legal authority to do so unless those resources are also considered historical resources subject to the purview of the OHP. In those cases, resources would appear in the BERD if they are built environment resources or they would be available through the appropriate IC if they are subject to confidentiality restrictions. For information about tribal cultural resources, contact the Native American Heritage Commission to request a list of tribes that may have an interest in the geographic area in question and then contact those tribes directly.
What is the relationship between the BERD and the Historic Properties Directory (HPD)?
The BERD replaces the former Historic Properties Directory (HPD) that previously provided evaluation status information for resources processed through the OHP. Researchers may find properties that were on the HPD but are not in the BERD. This is likely due to confidentiality concerns. Questions about the OHP's inventory, or discrepancies in data, can be directed to jmcdole@parks.ca.gov. Data discrepancies are best handled by email. Please provide the OTIS ID, the data causing the issue, and recommended solution(s).
