PROJECT OVERVIEW

California State Parks is working to develop
a General Plan to guide the park’s long-term management and operations. The Plan will be the primary managing document for Clear Lake State Park and will identify a vision for the park, with supporting goals and guidelines. The Plan will also guide Park staff and managers in deciding future park development and resource management. An Environmental Impact Report (EIR) will be prepared as part of the planning process to evaluate the potential environmental impacts associated with the proposals within the General Plan. The EIR is required under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).

A guiding ‘General Development Plan’ map was created for Clear Lake State Park in 1966, but no other long-term plan for the park exists. A General Plan will provide an opportunity to consider opportunities to improve the visitor experience, identify priority resource management and infrastructure needs, and allow members of the public to provide input on the management of the park.

California State Parks welcomes ideas and suggestions about the future of state park resources. The planning process includes multiple opportunities for engagement and public comment through an online survey, public workshops, and a public review period of the draft General Plan and EIR. Visit the Strategic Planning and Recreation Services Division homepage to learn more about current and past planning efforts at State Parks.

PARK HISTORY

Clear Lake State Park is an approximately 590-acre park on the southeast shore of Clear Lake, the largest freshwater lake fully within California. The park is located within unincorporated Lake County, about 125 miles north of San Francisco and 100 miles northwest of Sacramento. The park is part of the Northern Buttes District of State Parks, which ranges from the Clear Lake and Yuba City areas in the south to the Oregon and Nevada borders in the north.

Clear Lake State Park was fully opened to the public in 1952. Since then, the park has been developed with a visitor center, four campgrounds, cabins, a day-use picnic area, a boat launch and marina, a swimming beach, and hiking trails.
