Youth Aide Program
Youth Aides will work both within a group of their peers, as well as assisting Junior Guard Instructors during the JG program hours. The Youth Aide program is mentally and physically challenging, and is designed to inspire individuals to pursue employment as an Ocean Lifeguard. Youth Aides will gain the knowledge and skills necessary for becoming a California State Lifeguard.
Youth Aides in the program will receive training in intermediate to advanced CPR and first aid skills. Training will also focus on performing aquatic rescues, including actual time spent in towers with Seasonal Lifeguards.
Youth Aide Duties:
- Assist with the monitoring of aquatic activities and perform rescues
- Aide instructors with various program-related tasks
- Receive training in First Aid and CPR
- Receive training in California State Parks Lifeguard Rescue protocol
- Gain the knowledge and skills necessary to become a California State Park Lifeguard
Requirements:
- Minimum age of 15 years by start of first day of the program
- Past Junior Lifeguard Experience
- Be available for the majority of the program schedule.
Youth Aide Tryouts:
Pass a competitive physical test consisting of the following:
- 500 yard open water swim.
- Time limit of 10 minutes.
- 100 yard run-200 yard swim-100 yard run. (R-S-R)
- Time limit of 10 minutes.
- Qualification appraisal interview
- Successful completion of Silver Strand Youth Aide Training.
2024 Youth Aide Program Information
Tryout Swim & Training: Saturday May 18th & Sunday May 19th 2024, 8:00am - 4:00pm both days
- Swim is required for both new and returning Aides. Swim at 8:00am, followed by Training if successful completion of swim.
- All minors are required to have a parent/guardian present for the swim test.
- Youth Aide Application to be completed prior to Training.
- Swim and Training is MANDATORY in order to be a Youth Aide this summer.
