Update: May 20, 2024

California State Parks has operated San Onofre State Beach, under a lease agreement with the Department of the Navy for use of a portion of United States Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, since 1971.

The long-term lease for San Onofre State Beach is set to expire on August 31st, 2024. California State Parks is working closely with staff from the Department of Navy and Camp Pendleton on lease renewal opportunities regarding management and operation of San Onofre State Beach beyond the expiration of the current lease.

California State Parks continues to meet regularly with leadership from both Camp Pendleton and the Department of Navy on a regular basis. An agreement of this magnitude will take time to negotiate and finalize. Both Marine Base Camp Pendleton and California State Parks understand the importance of continuing the public access to San Onofre State Beach and will work collaboratively and respectfully with the Department of the Navy toward a final resolution, by the lease expiration in August of 2024.

Suggestions from the public on the lease process can be submitted to DPR online via San Onofre's Lease email address at SOSBLease@parks.ca.gov. DPR will not be able to respond to each suggestion, but it will keep submissions on hand for reference during the lease renewal process.

Thank you for your patience and support of California State Parks.
