Interpretation

Interpretation is a special form of communication that helps people understand, appreciate, and emotionally connect with the rich natural and cultural heritage preserved in parks.  It is the mission of interpretation in California State Parks to convey messages that initially help visitors value their experience, and ultimately will foster a conservation ethic and promote a dedicated park constituency.

INTERPRETIVE PARK AIDE

The Interpretive Park Aide is an entry level position that performs front line park operation work at Calaveras Big Trees Park. Duties include answering questions and providing information to the public, assisting interpretive staff with educational and interpretive programs, working in the visitor center, helping keep interpretive facilities clean and organized, and completing assigned projects. This not-to-exceed 1500 hours position will work under the supervision of the State Park Interpreter III and is coordinated by the lead State Park Interpreter II of Calaveras Big Trees Park. This position may work full-time in the summer or work part-time year-round, depending on applicant and park needs.

  • Starting pay $16.87-$20.29/hr depending on experience
  • Must be available to work weekends, evenings and holidays.

STATE PARK INTERPRETER I  (PI) - K-12 Access Program

Based at Calaveras Big Trees State Park in Arnold, CA the State Park Interpreter I (PI) will coordinate the K-12 Access program which engages students and teachers in learning about the park. The position includes both front line interpretive work as well as office based duties such as planning, research and development of interpretive projects and programs. Duties include implementation of the Parks Online Resources for Teachers and Students (PORTS) Program, digital media and content development, and delivery of distance learning presentations for the public with a focus on the K-12 community. Additionally, the position will be responsible for working closely with all staff and volunteers in the park to accomplish the tasks necessary to operate, protect, interpret and maintain the park to the highest quality standards. This includes implementing interpretive programs (onsite school visits, Junior Rangers, guided walks, campfire program) with a focus on giant sequoia tree interpretation. The position may serve as a lead for seasonal aides, interns and volunteers.

The State Park Interpreter I will work under the direction of the State Park Interpreter III of the Central Valley District.
