Lifeguard Cadet
Duties include the rescue of persons or vessels in distress, the performance of first aid, assist and advise park visitors regarding rules and regulations, enforce laws, interpret natural resources, perform resource protection and management, and operate and maintain emergency equipment. Cadets and lifeguards may perform cliff rescues and underwater diving.
Lifeguards and Rangers are trained peace officers and perform a wide variety of law enforcement activities.
Minimum Qualifications
Six months of experience as a lifeguard at facilities other than swimming pools.
Successful completion of two years (60 semester units) of study from a state accredited college or university, including a minimum of 21 semester units of course work satisfying General Education Curriculum standards. Specialization in park administration, natural sciences, social sciences, law enforcement or related fields is desirable.
Lifeguards must possess a valid California Driver’s License of the appropriate class; be in excellent physical condition and possess a corrected visual acuity of 20/20 or better in each eye; an uncorrected visual acuity of 20/40 or better in each eye; a peripheral visual field of at least 120 degrees horizontally and 100 degrees vertically in each eye; normal color vision, as determined by Ishihara or other color plate tests.
Minimum age for appointment to a peace officer class is eighteen years old. Due to the fact that State Park Rangers and Lifeguards are peace officers, an applicant who has been convicted of a felony will not be accepted for this examination.
