*HEAT ALERT: With temperatures set to exceed 110 degrees throughout much of the state this week, California is urging everyone to take extra precautions as they celebrate the Fourth of July. Governor Newsom has directed the Office of Emergency Services to activate its State Operations Center. Read about how California is preparing for this heatwave. The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for parts of California from 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 2, through Sunday, July 7, at 8 p.m. PDT. Robert Louis Stevenson State Park is partially closed on the main access. We advise all to stay out of the area while work continues on the fire.

The ecosystem diversity within California State Parks/Bay Area District results in a wide array of flora and fauna. Following such heavy rain this winter, we are anticipating an impressive wildflower display in Spring 2023. However, we wanted to alert the public that Bay Area District State Parks ( Mt. Tamalpais, China Camp, Tomales Bay, Samuel P Taylor, Sonoma State Historic Park, Trione-Annadel, Sugarloaf, Jack London, Bothe-Napa and Robert Luis Stevenson ) are not currently experiencing a “superbloom”. We do anticipate a significant bloom towards early May. Please monitor the social media channels of the Parks you intend to visit to get an alert when we do start to experience the massive blooms. We look forward to welcoming you to your local State Parks!
Robert Louis Stevenson State Park is the place where the famous author of Treasure Island and Kidnapped spent his honeymoon in 1880. Although nothing remains of Stevenson’s cabin, the site is identified on the trail to the summit.
The area features rough terrain, with evergreen forests in the canyons on north-facing slopes and chaparral on the south-facing slopes.
There is a five-mile hike to the top of Mt. St. Helena from which one can see much of the San Francisco Bay Area. On good days the top of Mt. Shasta can be seen, 192 miles in the distance.
To protect the park's wildlife and other natural resources, dogs are not permitted in this park.
Collecting or destroying anything in the park, including mushrooms, is prohibited.
Location/Directions
The park is seven miles north of Calistoga on Highway 29.
Seasons/Climate/Recommended clothing
The best seasons are spring and fall. The winter provides the best vistas, but also the greatest chance of snow and chilling wind.
