*HEAT ALERT: With temperatures set to exceed 110 degrees throughout much of the state this week, California is urging everyone to take extra precautions as they celebrate the Fourth of July. The Avenue of the Giants/HWY 254 is closed from 1 mile north of Phillipsville to 1 mile south of Miranda due to bridge construction, and from Weott to Dyerville Loop Road due to an active landslide. There is no ETA for re-opening at this time. The rest of the Avenue is open and HWY 101 should be used to bypass the closures. Please check the CalTrans map at https://quickmap.dot.ca.gov for the most up to date information on road conditions."

Welcome to Humboldt Redwoods State Park

In the early 1900s, loggers came to what is now Humboldt Redwoods State Park to cut down lofty ancient redwoods for grape stakes and shingles. The founders of Save the Redwoods League thought that was akin to “chopping up a grandfather clock for kindling.” From the acquisition of a single grove in 1921, the League has raised millions of dollars to build and expand this park. Today Humboldt Redwoods spans 53,000 acres, an area almost twice the size of San Francisco. About one third, or 17,000 acres, of the park is old-growth redwood forest—the largest expanse of ancient redwoods left on the planet.
