Station Handouts

The documents below are for use by groups participating in the Environmental Living Program (ELP) or Environmental Studies Program (ESP) at Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park.

On the day of their program, students participating in ELP or ESP will be split into small groups and will rotate between various stations run by parent volunteers. The following handouts are training guides for these stations. Parent volunteers who have been assigned to run a station should download and study the station handout for their assigned station. They should also print a copy and bring it with them to their assigned ELP or ESP Workshop.

The documents below are listed in alphabetical order and numbered 1-15. Numbers 3 and 8 are only applicable for those participating in ELP due to the fact that those stations are not offered for ESP.

In addition to the main 15 handouts, there are also an additional 3 listed at the end and labeled A-C. These contain supplemental information that will help groups participating in ELP or ESP.

A. SCHOOL STATION -- This station is not trained at the ELP and ESP Workshops but can still be run as a station on an ELP or ESP day.

B. FIRE STARTING – Fire starting is a very important part of an ELP day and all ELP groups (but not ESP groups) are required to have a parent assigned as a fire starter. Fire starting is trained at the Workshops and fire starters should go through this handout and attend the Workshop to learn about how to start and maintain fires at Sutter’s Fort.

C. PEROID CLOTHING -- ELP and ESP allows students to simulate life at Sutter’s Fort in the 1840s. Therefore, wearing period-appropriate clothing is required and not only enhances the experience but also encourages role playing. Both students and participating parents should wear period clothing to their ELP or ESP.
