ABOUT THE ASSISTANTS

The Monterey Junior Lifeguard Assistant Program is a volunteer job development program for youths ages 15 - 17. The Assistant program provides veteran  Junior Lifeguards with the skills and experience needed for possible future employment as a professional Lifeguard.

Volunteer Assistants work under the close supervision of the Junior Lifeguard instructor staff to help safeguard the participants in the Junior Lifeguard Program area during all aquatic beach activities.  Assistants also work on a daily basis helping with the setup, distribution, and break down of our daily program equipment & gear.  They also serve as mentors to the you younger participants in the JG program.  Each JG Assistant will have their hours tracked and logged to provide proof of community service hours if needed for High School requirment purposes.

PLEASE READ IMPORTANT INFORMATION BELOW

Because such a large number of our assistants become professional Seasonal Lifeguards, it has been decided that the Monterey JG Assistant Program will serve as a type of job shadowing experience, yet they will still work on a volunteer basis. Assistants will be selected based on swimming ability, work ethic, attitude, availability, responsibility, accountability, ocean experience, and willingness to be a role model to Junior Guard participants. We also expect our Assistants to attend other Junior Guard functions, such as the Junior Guard tryouts and Field Trips when possible. They will be respected, well trained and better prepared for job searching in the future. Just like our Seasonal Lifeguards, they must pass a distance swim test and run swim run test in the ocean. Upon successful completion of the swim tests in the alloted time, candidates will be given an interview time for later that day.
