May 2024 Schedule

Sat., May 4: Docent led nature walk from the Ricardo Visitor Center. Learn about the various plants and their flowers along with the small animals and how they adapted to the harsh desert environment. Meet at the Ricardo Visitor Center at 9:00am.

Sat., May 4: Join the China Lake Astronomical Society for a "Star Party". This is your chance to view planets, constellations, and other celestial objects in the night sky through remarkable telescopes. All ages welcome. Meet at the visitor center parking lot at dusk.

Sat., May 11: Come with us on a two-mile roundtrip hike to the Jurassic Park filming location, when Red Rock Canyon State Park was used as a stand-in for fossil beds in Montana. Leading the hike will be Jon Hammond, a naturalist and fluent speaker of the Nuwa (Kawaiisu or Southern Paiute) Indian language, who will be pointing out native plants and sharing information about the history of the area as we make our way to the filming site. The hike is an out-and-back two-mile hike, rated as easy to moderate. Meet at the visitor center at 9:00am for an introduction. Visitors will follow by personal vehicle one mile to Red Cliffs trailhead for the start of the hike.

Sat., May 11: Join us in the evening for a special guest presentation by Jon Hammond and Gene Albitre. Jon will be speaking on "Nuwa Insights: Language and Lifeways of One of Red Rock Canyon's Native People." Gene Albitre will be speaking on "Native American Culture - artifacts, culture, and beliefs." Meet at the amphitheater at 7:00pm.

Sat., May 18: Docent led nature walk titled "A Walk Through Time". You will learn about weather changes, extinct and present wildlife, Native American uses of plants, and the geological make up of Red Rock Canyon. Meet at the Desert View Trailhead near campsite 50 at 9:00am.

Sat., May 18: Join us in the evening for a special guest presentation by renowned botanist, Mare Nazaire, who will be speaking on "The Extraordinary and Unique Botanical Treasures of Red Rock Canyon State Park." Meet inside the visitor center at 7:00pm.

Sat., May 25: Docent led nature walk from the Ricardo Visitor Center. Learn about the various plants and their flowers along with the small animals and how they adapted to the harsh desert environment. Meet at the Ricardo Visitor Center at 10:00am.

Sat., May 25: Join us in the evening for a talk on the "Desert Tortoises" found in Red Rock Canyon and around the Mojave Desert. Learn about the special diet of the tortoises and how they survive in this landscape. Meet inside the visitor center at 7:00pm.
