Logo The Santa Monica Mountains Natural History Association funds and supports educational and interpretive programs at Leo Carrillo State Park, Point Mugu State Park and Point Dume State Preserve. Working in partnership with the California State Parks, the Association enables positive visitor experiences that are not only educational, but also memorable.

The Association supports the Parks interpretive services that include public walks, school programs, Junior Rangers, Junior Lifeguards, campfire programs, brochures, exhibits, visitor centers, docent programs and community education events. In addition to these valuable programs, the Association sponsors the Park's Annual Whale Festival.

The Annual Whale Festival is a one-day event held at Leo Carrillo State Park. The event includes whale-watching stations, marine conservation information booths, children’s activities, food booths, marine artists and live performers. The goal of the Whale Festival is to educate the public about marine wildlife and conservation, particularly focusing on the California Gray Whale.

The Association accomplishes their goals through the work of dedicated volunteers and members, the generosity of individual and business donors, and support from foundations and grants. Program Overview

Through the Cooperating Associations Program, California State Parks has valuable relationships with more than 80 cooperating associations authorized pursuant to Public Resources Code 513. The association on this page is one of these official organizations. Like other associations it is dedicated to enhancing the educational and interpretive programs in California State Parks.

Cooperating associations are related to, but independent of the state parks they serve. They are recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as charitable nonprofit organizations (IRS 501 (c) 3) .
