MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

ALL LEVELS: The following educational requirements are part of the "Minimum Qualifications" for all levels in the series:

Education: Equivalent to graduation from college with a major in ecology, natural resource management, forestry, range management, biology, botany, zoology, wildlife management, or other closely related ecological or biological field. Applicants with majors in basic physical science may apply if they have a background in the biological sciences as well. (Registration as a senior in a recognized institution will admit applicants to the examination, but they must produce evidence of graduation before they can be considered eligible for appointment.)



ASSISTANT STATE PARK RESOURCE ECOLOGIST

Education indicated above. (Registration as a senior in a recognized institution will admit applicants to the examination, but they must produce evidence of graduation before they can be considered eligible for appointment.)

Knowledge of: Principles of ecology; principles, techniques, and application of natural resource management in California involving plant, wildlife, forestry, range, and soil science; the general effect of development and other land use practices on natural resource values.

Ability to: Collect and evaluate natural resource information; understand soil-vegetation-animal interrelationships and make recommendation for the protection, enhancement, and perpetuation of natural resource values in the State Park System; effectively communicate both orally and in writing; prepare reports; establish and maintain effective working relations with a variety of private and government groups.


ASSOCIATE STATE PARK RESOURCE ECOLOGIST

Either I
Two years of experience performing the duties of an Assistant State Park Resource Ecologist, Range B, in the California state service.
Or II
Three years of increasingly responsible professional experience in the analysis, formulation, or implementation of resource management and protection programs, two years of which shall have been equivalent in responsibility to an Assistant State Park Resource Ecologist, Range B, in California state service.

Knowledge of: All of the above, and principles of ecological research; State Park System rules, policies, and resource management directives; laws and regulations of other governmental agencies as they relate to the State Park System and its natural resource values; California vegetation and wildlife ecology and species distribution; fire ecology and techniques of prescribed fire use; effects of development and human use on the natural environment; activities of other agencies and private organizations interested in natural resource management.

Ability to: All of the above, and evaluate complex ecological studies and develop innovative resource management programs for the protection, restoration, and perpetuation of natural resource systems; prepare long-range management plans and assist in the formulation of major policy; monitor for ecology degradation and impacts from recreational use; assist in the planning and direct the implementation of prescribed fire programs in a unit or area; coordinate and lead the work of others; prepare clear, complete, and technically accurate reports; effectively administer major and complex projects.
